1. Statement of Commitment

Spire Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people. The wellbeing of students is paramount, and every student has the right to feel safe, respected, and protected from harm.

Safeguarding is taken seriously in all aspects of tutoring, whether sessions are delivered in person or online.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All students under the age of 18

  • All tutoring sessions (online and in-person)

  • All communication with students and parents

  • Any associated educational activities

3. Legal Framework

This policy is informed by UK safeguarding guidance, including:

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)

  • Working Together to Safeguard Children

  • The Children Act 1989 and 2004

4. Responsibility for Safeguarding

Spire Learning operates as a sole tutoring service.

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL):

The DSL is responsible for:

  • Responding to safeguarding concerns

  • Maintaining up-to-date safeguarding training and awareness

  • Keeping accurate records

  • Liaising with parents, schools, and external agencies where necessary

5. Safer Working Practices

To maintain professional boundaries and ensure student safety:

  • Communication with students under 18 is conducted via parents wherever appropriate

  • Professional language and behaviour are maintained at all times

  • Personal relationships with students are strictly prohibited

  • Physical contact is avoided

  • Sessions take place in appropriate, visible, and professional environments

6. Recruitment and Checks

  • The tutor holds an enhanced DBS check

  • Identity and qualifications are verified

  • Professional standards are maintained at all times

7. Online Safety

For online tutoring:

  • Lessons are conducted using secure platforms (e.g. Zoom, Teams)

  • Parents are informed of lesson arrangements

  • Students are encouraged to work in a suitable, appropriate environment

  • The tutor works in a professional setting

  • Session links are shared securely and not publicly

8. Recognising Safeguarding Concerns

Safeguarding concerns may include:

  • Physical abuse

  • Emotional abuse

  • Sexual abuse

  • Neglect

  • Online harm or exploitation

Signs may include changes in behaviour, distress, withdrawal, or direct disclosure.

9. Responding to Concerns

If a concern arises:

  1. It will be taken seriously and recorded as soon as possible

  2. The student will be listened to, without judgement

  3. Confidentiality will not be promised, as concerns may need to be shared

  4. Parents will usually be informed unless this may put the child at risk

  5. Concerns may be referred to:

    • The student’s school

    • Local safeguarding services

    • Social care or the NSPCC

In cases of immediate danger, emergency services will be contacted.

10. Confidentiality and Data Protection

  • Information is shared only on a need-to-know basis

  • Records are stored securely

  • Data is handled in accordance with UK GDPR

11. Working with Parents

  • Parents or carers are the primary point of contact

  • Clear communication is maintained regarding lessons and wellbeing

  • Parents are encouraged to raise any concerns promptly

12. Allegations

Any allegation concerning the tutor will be taken seriously and handled appropriately. External advice will be sought where necessary, and full cooperation will be given to any investigation.

13. Review

This policy is reviewed annually or when guidance changes to ensure it remains current and effective.
